From Left-Side Roads to California: The First-Week Adjustments That Matter
Experienced drivers from left-side countries are not new drivers in skill. They are new drivers in reflex, and reflexes are what take over at a busy junction. The first week in California is about rewiring a handful of them deliberately.
The rewiring list
| Habit from home | In California |
|---|---|
| Keep left | Keep right; pass on the left |
| Roundabouts clockwise | Counter-clockwise; yield to all traffic already in the roundabout, enter to the right |
| The "easy" turn is left | The easy turn is right, close to the curb; a left turn crosses oncoming traffic |
| No turns on red | Right on red after a full stop, unless a sign prohibits it |
| Driver's seat on the right | Seat on the left, so lane position tends to drift until you recalibrate |
Turns on a red light
Under Vehicle Code section 21453, unless a sign prohibits it, a driver facing a steady red light may, after stopping, turn right — or turn left from a one-way street onto another one-way street. You must yield to pedestrians in the adjacent crosswalk and to any vehicle close enough to be a hazard. A red arrow means no turn in that direction.
Four-way stops, which many countries don't use
The DMV handbook's rule: the vehicle that arrives first goes first. If two arrive at the same time, yield to the one on your right. At a stop sign on all four corners, stop first, then apply the same rule. Pedestrians have the right-of-way at intersections.
Left turns, the risky one now
The DMV handbook's steps are worth following literally at first: move close to the center divider or into the left-turn lane, signal, stop behind the limit line, and keep your wheels pointed straight until it is safe to turn — if you are hit from behind with your wheels turned left, you can be pushed into oncoming traffic. Finish the turn in the left lane of the new road. A center two-way left-turn lane may be used for only 200 feet before the turn.
A first-week practice plan
- Day 1: an empty parking lot to feel the car from the left seat.
- Days 2–3: quiet streets, right turns and stop signs, saying "stay right" out loud after every turn.
- Days 4–5: left turns with protected green arrows, then unprotected ones.
- Day 6: a roundabout, if there is one nearby, at a quiet time.
- Day 7: a short freeway run, merging from a long on-ramp.
The moments of greatest risk are the ones where autopilot returns: pulling out of a parking lot onto an empty road, or the first turn after a long day. Those are when a sticky note saying "RIGHT" on the dashboard earns its place.
The license and the insurance
The DMV says every California resident needs a California license to drive, and someone with a license from another country also has to pass a drive test — exactly where left-side reflexes show up, so practice the list above first.
For rating, California defines years of driving experience as years licensed in any jurisdiction (10 CCR 2632.5(c)(3)). Your years at home belong on that line; what proof each company accepts is its own decision, so bring your foreign license dates to every quote.

Can you turn right on red in California?
Yes. After stopping, you may turn right on a steady red light unless a sign prohibits it, yielding to pedestrians and close traffic. A red arrow means no turn.
Which way do you go around a roundabout in California?
Counter-clockwise. Slow down, yield to all traffic already in the roundabout, enter to the right when there is a safe gap, and signal when you exit.
Does my driving experience from a left-side country count for insurance?
California counts years licensed in any jurisdiction as driving experience. What documents each company accepts as proof varies, so bring your license dates.
